NURSING NEWSLETTER
Here at DNA Medical we wanted to drop you a line to say hello and give you a little insight into the goings on in our healthcare recruitment world.
Lets start with some tips and a checklist for taxable deductions for you as professionals
Self-education
Claim for conference and training expenses. In addition to the cost of the course, this can also include travel, meals and accommodation costs.
Work-related clothing
If you’re required to wear a uniform as part of your role, the cost is deductible. Additionally, occupation-specific clothing is also deductible as well as garments such as aprons or laboratory coats.
COVID-19
COVID-19 protection is deductible for items like:
- Gloves
- Face masks
- Sanitiser
- Antibacterial spray
COVID-19 tests are deductible where they are taken for work-related purposes however RAT kits purchased for private purposes are not tax deductible.
Professional subscriptions
The costs of renewing your annual practising certificate are deductible as are the costs of journals and magazines with content aligned with nursing.
Travel and meals
You can claim the cost of travelling between two workplaces, such as between two hospitals or medical centres and the cost of transporting patients and travelling between patient’s homes is deductible. This includes public transport and taxi costs.
If using your own car for work purposes, you can either claim a set rate of 72 cents per kilometre for all work journeys, or you can claim the actual expenses incurred but remember to keep receipts for all costs.
Working from home
If you spend time working from home then you can claim a proportion of home running costs, either based on actual costs a standard rate of 52 cents per hour or the special concessional rate of 80 cents per hour. Again, remember to keep receipts/bills as evidence.
Tools and equipment
Claim for items including stethoscopes and other medical equipment, reference books and nursing fobs.
We hope that’s given you some food for thought and something to think about for your 2021/22 tax return. If in doubt, always seek professional advice.
Please get in touch with the team here at DNA Medical if you wish to discuss prospective work opportunities – we are always happy to help and keen to secure our nurses the best roles for the best rates available.
